Robert Stewart attended Glasgow School of Art during the 1940s and went on to become the head of printed textile department in 1949. He taught at the Glasgow School of Art for thirty five years and over that time he inspired many young designers to be, with his talent and passion.

Although Stewart was prolific in many fields of design, he is perhaps best known for his textiles which were produced by Liberty, Pringle and Donald Brothers throughout the 1950’s.

Robert Stewart, one of the design pioneers of the 20th Century. Robert and Sheila Stewart lived in Cowal since 1961 and sons Billy and Alan run Stewarts Garage in Dunoon. In 1975 a Robert Stewart mural was presented to the newly opened Kilmodan school in the Clachan of Glendaruel. Robert Stewart and his family lived in the area and his children attended the school. This amazing artwork of 16 elaborately decorated ceramic panels depicting majestic bird soaring above a rugged landscape of standing stones and wild grasses, lit by a golden moon, is being made available to the public for Cowalfest.
